Who is Yoga Good For?
Everyone can benefit from yoga, irrespective of age, shape or fitness levels. Physically, it enhances flexibility, strength, and balance. Regularly practising yoga can also increase your stamina and improve your circulation, digestion, and lung capacity. In terms of your mental health yoga is renowned for reducing stress and anxiety through mindful breathing and meditation practices. It also supports better sleep patterns and enhances concentration and memory.
Is Yoga Good for Beginners?
Everyone can reap the benefits of yoga – whether they are beginners or more experienced. It is an excellent form of exercise. Because there is such a range of postures and you can vary the pace, it can be adapted to suit the level of challenge you are looking for. However, it is especially good for people experiencing stress or anxiety or those who want a gentle form of exercise because they are recovering from injuries or illness or have long-term health issues. Yoga is particularly beneficial for beginners because it offers a gentle introduction to exercise, emphasises self-awareness, and promotes overall well-being. However, its inclusive nature means that even healthy individuals or those seeking a new form of exercise can benefit significantly.

Different Types of Yoga: Hatha Yoga vs. Vinyasa Flow
BEGINNERS YOGA EDINBURGH
Understanding the different styles of yoga can be helpful for beginners. Hatha Yoga and Vinyasa Flow are two popular forms of yoga for beginners. We havc several Hatha and Vinyasa Flow classes at Tidal.
Hatha Yoga for Beginners
Hatha Yoga is often considered a slower-paced, more meditative form of yoga, focusing on holding poses for more extended periods. This style is excellent for beginners because it allows time to learn and maintain correct alignment in each posture, ensuring safety and maximising the benefit of each pose. Hatha Yoga is also a fantastic way to introduce the principles of breathwork (pranayama) and meditation. As you get stronger, you can step up the pace and try more challenging poses.
Vinyasa Flow Yoga for Beginners
Vinyasa Flow is a style of yoga where you move through a dynamic sequence of postures. The emphasis is on smoothly transitioning from one pose to another and coordinating your movement with your breath. This style of yoga is more vigorous and physically demanding than something like a Hatha Yoga class. It builds heat, endurance, flexibility, and strength. Although it can be more challenging, a slower paced Vinyasa Flow class is still accessible to beginners seeking a more active exercise regime.
Things to consider before starting yoga as a beginner
Before beginning a yoga practice, there are several factors to consider:
Health Issues
Please first consult your doctor if you have any existing injuries or concerns about your health. Let your teacher know if you have any health issues or injuries. They can offer adjustments to poses that would put too much of a strain on a weaker part of your body.
Goals
Identify what you hope to achieve with yoga, whether it’s improved flexibility, stress reduction, strength building, or emotional healing. This will help you choose the right style of yoga. Again, talk to your teacher about this so they can adapt the practice to meet your goals.
Yoga Clothing
Loose and comfy is key. Wearing a top that won’t ride up over your head when you are in a downward dog is also a good idea. If you want to wear a baggy T, make sure you can knot it or tuck it in. Keeping your feet bare is important for grip, so if you don’t like being barefooted, please make sure you are wearing grippy socks. Layers are a good idea to keep the muscles warm when cooling down.
Yoga Equipment
The basic yoga equipment is a mat, blocks and a strap. If you have your own yoga mat that’s great but don’t worry if you don’t as the studio supplies these. Blocks and straps will also be supplied if a class needs them.

Group or Private Yoga Class? What’s best for beginners?
For beginners, joining a group yoga class is an excellent way to start out on your yoga journey. Classes provide a structured environment for learning the different poses under the guidance of an experienced teacher. When starting out it is important to get the right alignment in each pose and a teacher can help you adjust your body to get the most out of each posture. This means that you will perform each pose safely and have a solid foundation on which to build as you progress.
If you are feeling a bit anxious about attending a yoga class as a beginner, you can take a private class to learn some of the basic postures before going into a group setting. Alex offers private classes on a 1 to 1 basis or for small groups. You can try an individual taster class or book a course of classes. I offer a discount when booking more than one session.
