GENTLE YOGA CLASS EDINBURGH
“It is a technique ideally suited to prevent physical and mental illness and to protect the body generally, developing an inevitable sense of self reliance and assurance. By its very nature it is inextricably associated with universal laws: for respect of life, truth and patience are all indispensable factors in the drawing of a quiet breath, in calmness of mind and firmness of will.”
From the foreword written by Yehudi Menuhin on Light on Yoga by BKS Iyengar
PRIVATE YOGA CLASSES EDINBURGH
We spend much of our time working, sitting at a desk, at a laptop, or with our neck bent over a phone. If we work in physically demanding jobs or looking after children, this can take its toll on our bodies. Even the demands of a social life adds to the pace of life. Perhaps another late night when you didn’t sleep so well? The demands of our daily lives often leave us feeling that there is another day gone by where we didn’t manage to get outside and enjoy a walk or spend quality time with friends or loved ones. We are all busy and sometimes that can lead to the build-up of a lot of stress. Stress releases cortisol in our bodies which, in turn, adds to the inflammation and strain on our bodies and minds. With constant texts, social media, work, rent, bills, it all mounts up.
Yoga helps to trigger the parasympathetic nervous system which brings down levels of cortisol and helps remind your body how to stay calm. Yoga also supports mental clarity as you have to listen to instruction as you begin to learn postures, and slowly begin to appreciate the intuitive wisdom of the body.
PRIVATE YOGA CLASSES EDINBURGH
Many studies have taken place that support the benefits of yoga including recent research showing how yoga benefits older women who may be at risk of Alzheimer’s Disease. The NHS recognises that there is some evidence that regularly practising yoga can help people with a range of conditions including high blood pressure, heart disease, aches and pains, including lower back pain, depression and stress. Yoga also supports a sense of personal identity and agency which is wonderful if you are struggling with anxiety, gender dysmorphia, body image anxiety or simply a lack of self confidence.
Many people say, ‘I’m not flexible enough for yoga’ – well, you are! Yoga isn’t about getting into the shape of a pretzel, it is about using your breath to guide you through a series of postures that support your core, your spine, your balance, your brain and help you build strength and focus both physically and mentally. Yoga is a practice, some days it will go well, some days it might not seem to go so well. However, each practice will help you find a better connection between mind, body and breath. This can provide a sense of security, grounding, purpose or agency. If you don’t feel confident enough to join in a class or have particular health needs that mean it is not practically possible for you to get to a class, contact me to arrange a private yoga class in Edinburgh.
