What is Hatha Yoga?
Hatha yoga is often thought of as a specific style of yoga. However, “Hatha” actually refers to a much wider tradition within yoga practice.
Within the yoga tradition, Hatha encompasses various techniques aimed at balancing the body and mind, including physical postures, breathing exercises, and meditation. So Hatha is actually the foundation for many modern yoga styles, spanning the physical and spiritual aspects of yoga.
For those interested in a traditional Hatha-inspired practice, we offer classes designed with this gentle, accessible approach in mind, perfect for beginners and those who enjoy a slower-paced style.
A Bit More About This Style of Yoga
Hatha yoga is a traditional form of yoga that combines physical postures (asanas) with the breath (pranayama) and meditation practices. The name “Hatha” is derived from the Sanskrit words “ha” (sun) and “tha” (moon), symbolising balance and harmony between opposites. The practice is designed to create equilibrium in the body and mind, helping to align your energy and improve your overall well-being.
In a typical Hatha yoga class, we will guide you through a series of yoga poses that are held for several breaths, which allows you to focus on your alignment. Hatha-style yoga classes are generally a slower pace than some other styles, such as Vinyasa or Ashtanga, so it is a good style of yoga to try if you are a beginner.
What to Expect in a Tidal Hatha Yoga Class
During our Hatha yoga classes, you will be guided through a sequence of poses that focus on building strength, flexibility, and mindfulness. Our instructors will demonstrate each pose, offering modifications and adjustments to ensure that everyone can participate comfortably. The class will also include breathing exercises and relaxation techniques to help you connect with your body and unwind.
Who is Hatha Yoga Good For?
One of the greatest strengths of Hatha yoga is its adaptability. Hatha-style yoga can be adapted for people of all ages and fitness levels. However, it is particularly good for:
Beginners: The slow pace of Hatha yoga and focus on foundational poses make it perfect for those who are new to yoga or returning after a long break. Moving at a slower pace means you’ll have plenty of time to learn how to get into each posture. It is more important to make sure your body is properly aligned than it is to reach the perfect pose.
Older People: Hatha yoga’s gentle approach makes it a great choice for older adults who want to stay active, improve flexibility, and maintain balance. Modifications can always be made to adapt poses to the particular needs of students. Always make your teacher aware if you have any injuries or problems with particular parts of your body.
Anyone Seeking Stress Relief: If you’re feeling overwhelmed, anxious, or stressed, Hatha yoga can help. The combination of mindful movement, breathwork, and relaxation techniques encourages a sense of calm and can help to lower stress levels.
People with Limited Flexibility: You don’t need to be flexible to practise Hatha yoga. In fact, regular practice can help improve flexibility over time. Teachers at Tidal will offer modifications to poses if you have a problem area and encourage the use of props like blocks or straps to make poses more comfortable.
Those Recovering from Injury: Hatha yoga’s emphasis on gentle movements and proper alignment can aid in recovery from injuries. Despite Hatha being a gentle yoga practice make sure you consult your doctor before starting yoga classes if you have any injuries or health problems.

Preparing for Your Class in Hatha Yoga Edinburgh
There is no need to bring anything special but please do wear comfortable clothing.
Comfortable Clothing: Wear loose, breathable clothing that allows for a full range of motion. Stretchy fabrics like leggings or yoga pants paired with a fitted top work well. You may want to bring a light layer to keep warm during the final relaxation.
Yoga Mat: If you have your own yoga mat, feel free to bring it. However, we do provide high-quality mats at the studio, so there’s no need to worry if you don’t have one.
Props: The studio has blocks, straps, and bolsters to help you modify poses and make them more accessible. You can bring your own props if you prefer, but Tidal will provide all the necessary equipment.
